01 / The job

Charging at home, without tripping the house.

A home EV charger is one of the largest continuous loads a house will ever run. Whether it fits comfortably depends less on the charger and more on everything else in the house: gas or electric cooking, hot water, heating, and how many split systems are running on a winter evening.

So we check capacity first. For most single-phase homes, a 7kW charger is the practical choice; faster chargers need a three-phase supply to reach their rated output. We'll give you an honest recommendation for your property rather than selling you the biggest box.

Where capacity is tight, load management lets the charger back off automatically when the house is busy instead of tripping the main switch. If you have solar, or are planning it, we can set the charger up to make the most of your own generation.

    Certificate of Electrical Safety, a labelled board schedule, test results, and warranty details. Filed, not verbal.

Asked often.

Do I need a mains upgrade to install an EV charger?

Sometimes, and it depends on the finished load rather than the charger alone. A house with gas cooking and gas hot water often has room for a 7kW charger as-is. A fully electric house with an induction cooktop, heat pump and three split systems usually doesn't. We do a capacity check before quoting so you know either way before you buy a unit.

Do you charge for quotes?

Quotes for planned work (switchboards, EV chargers, splits, rewires and electrification) are free and given in writing after we've been on site. Fault finding is charged, because the diagnosis is the work; we'll tell you the call-out rate on the phone before we book anything in.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. NPJ Electrical Services is a Registered Electrical Contractor, REC 29126, with full public liability cover, and we issue a Certificate of Electrical Safety for every job. Our licence and ABN are in the footer and on every quote we send.
